The stokvel has been a part of African culture for decades. It’s a place where friends meet for companionship, good times and a social way of saving money. This much loved institution became the dynamic backdrop for a great TV show, Stokvel, which explores the culture, the relationships, and the colourful characters you would find in a typical stokvel. This show is set in Soweto, South Africa and focuses on a young professional and aspirational couple, Mojo Khumalo, and his beautiful wife, Lerata. Mojo and Lerata each belong to a stokvel. Mojo is chairman of the men’s stokvel, Majakathata, and Lerata is the treasurer of the women’s society, Sweet Harmony. Through their respective meetings, we meet the other characters who populate this fun and crazy show.
