Tanzania, one of the jewels of East Africa has been making movies for over 50 years. With its rich and diverse cultural roots, Tanzanian movies are at the forefronts African cinematic storytelling. Unbeknown to many Tanzania’s Swahiliwood, which according to Media for Development International is the 5th largest film industry in the world by volume. The foundations for the Tanzanian movie industry were laid by films like Fimbo ya Mnyonge, Maangamizi-The Ancient One, Arusi ys Marium, Yomba Yomba, Mama Tumaini, Rama, Zawadi, Chumo and Chukua Pipi.

Today Tanzania has one of the largest film industries in the world. This in part is due to its history in filmmaking and also due to Nollywood style productions called ‘Bongo Movies’. These ‘Bongo Movies’ have created an industry from nothing leading to increased access and variety for Tanzanian audiences.
Movies like Chungu are front and center at the forefronts of the ever growing Tanzanian movie industry. Chungu is an award winning Tanzanian film directed by Kimela Billa and produced by Vincensia Shule, which tells the story of the risks wanting something too much. An aspiring politician pays bribes to win Councillor seat but everything goes wrong. The story becomes one of greed, power and witchcraft. Chungu won Best Tanzanian Film at the Zanzibar International Film Festival 2012 and lead actor Richard Mshanga won Best Tanzanian Actor. Chungu is available on Wabona.
